The governors of Wood Street Infant School have decided to close Wood Street Pre-school in July 2011 as they want more space within the building for the Infant School. Though this is understandable, it is obviously very upsetting for staff parents and children.Wood Street Pre-school is a friendly, warm and safe environment for children to have their first experience of education. Children who attend the school are confident and happy. Staff are an inspiration and foster a real curiosity about the world.
To add further insult, governors only informed parents and staff about the closure on 5th of March leaving very little time to organise new places for children in September. Most of the local pre-schools have already filled their places, leaving over twenty children with no place in September. This is hugely disrupting for these children who have already settled into pre-school life and is potentially devastating to their start in education. It leaves the already overburdened pre-school provision in Guildford in crisis as another 52 places need to be found elsewhere.
Ideally, there would be no change to the current arrangements, though we understand that this might not be viable long-term. At the very least, parents want at least one more academic year before closure, to allow the pre-school to find new premises and parents to find new places for their children.
